I already forgot

It was during our second period of the day. My students were doing some book speed dating, when I thought, “Oh I should write about this!” It wasn’t the speed dating, but something a kid said or wrote that gave me that moment of inspiration. Of course, I didn’t get a chance to jot down the idea because the rest of the period was bustling with activity and without a moment of rest, the next group of kids started streaming in. It’s finally lunch and I wanted to write that piece, but for the life I can’t remember what it was.

So much is going on, both inside and out, as a new school years launches. Your experience reminds me of a poem by Bariss Mills, “Gone Forever.” (https://www.rawbw.com/~cport/docs/poem.html) Despite the contextual differences, I know you can relate to these words: “I should have scribbled it…” I hope the speed dating worked some matchmaking miracles. Have a great start.

Oh! I hate when that happens! Sometimes as I’m laying in bed in those in between sleep and waking times, I think of something I want to write and remember, but I don’t want to get out of bed to jot it down. So I lay there and rehearse it a bit. Sure enough, when I get ready to write it down it completely escapes me. I’ve thought about speaking and recording my thoughts on my iPhone; however, I don’t want to wake my husband.

I LOVE how you wrote about how you forgot what you wanted to write. In the forgetting, you wrote a fun slice. And yes, I hate when that happens to me, too!

This has happened to me more than once and I keep telling myself that next time I will write the thought down immediately so I don’t forget. I never do.

Vivian, bravo for this post that came out of the not-remembering. That happens so often to me too. I like that you wrote about forgetting, and that made a great slice. It may remind you some day of what you forgot too.

It happens and we remember it at the most unexpected moment.
