Field trip

For years, holbox, has been on our list of eateries to try. But the list is long, as is the line at this place. It was recently awarded a Michelin star which hasn’t helped reduce the crowd so it often ended up being one of the last in line—until today. This Mexican seafood restaurant is an order-at-the-counter establishment in a place called Mercado la Paloma. To call it a food hall would be insufficient—it’s more of a community hub with restaurants, shops, and nonprofit organizations located under one roof.

We made a plan to get there right at opening, but our lazy summer pace put us about 15 minutes behind our goal. When we arrived, there were already about a dozen parties ahead of us, and the counter, which is first-come, first-served, was fully sat. We would not be deterred. Summer break afforded us the time to wait and good things come to those who wait, right?

The wait was well worth it, as we were treated to some of the freshest and most flavorful seafood we’ve ever experienced. The service was also friendly and efficient.

What stood out the most about our little adventure is that none of it would’ve been possible without our incredible immigrant community. While the media has quieted down about the inhumane ICE raids and detention, they are still happening. I hope to bring awareness to this situation so that it isn’t forgotten.

    Vivian,

I was right there w/ you, thinking as I read: “What stood out the most about our little adventure is that none of it would’ve been possible without our incredible immigrant community.” So much that we take for granted in this country we owe to immigrants. I know those raids are still happening and wish they were given more print and air time. I fear they are being normalized.

What vivid photos and an important reminder and message about the many cultures food brings to one plate. Thanks for sharing and glad you were able to try it out!

That menu—and the presentation—is stunning! What a place to visit and to make your most important point: we are made and enriched by multitudes working side-by-side. Exclusion, fear never created anything worth waiting in line for.

So glad you waited and it was worth it. So many of us forgot, or choose not to remember, that somewhere in our ancestry we all came from immigrants trying to escape some form of oppression to start a better life.
