Paradox of choice

Hats off to those of you who can log in to Canva and create a beautiful flyer or presentation within a reasonable amount of time! I’m writing this later than I wanted to because of the inordinate amount of time I spent going down the Canva rabbit hole. Sure you can choose to customize a premade template, but do you want it to be playful? Modern? Minimalist? Fun? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Do you want it to be bright colors, pastel, blues, neutral? Which fonts do you want to use? All of those options and tools, but instead of saving time, I’ve spent double, okay triple, the amount of time I should’ve to create one document. It’s actually a small miracle that I completed anything. And do I think it’s the best I could’ve done? Nope.

I know I’m not the only one…

    Vivian,

Have you read The Paradox of Choice? That book changed my life and my teaching. I think we’re all better off when we limit our choices. And I’ve come to realize those limits are part of the reason I like living in a rural state and in a town that doesn’t offer all the choices one finds in urban areas. I talked often about the paradox of choice w/ students, too.

You are not the only one. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill? Choice can do that! I have yet to listen to all of Barry Schwartz’s talk, but he spoke at a TED local event at my alma mater about the selection process at elite colleges that I have never forgotten. It altered my perception and my attitude. I will be listening to this—once I get my Slice written! Thanks.,
