Lessons from an escape room

    It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve had a moment to write a slice. I didn’t want another week to go by because fellow slicers, you know what happens.

    Last week we went on our annual pre-Thanksgiving trip to Vegas. This is the 8th year maybe. While we’ve tried to different restaurants and seen a variety of shows, one thing we always do is an escape room. (I used to be scared of them, but maybe that’s a slice for next time.)

    Here are some life lessons I think we can learn or be reminded of when trapped in a room of puzzles:

    1. Take time to look around, really observe your surroundings.
    2. Pause before taking action.
    3. Lean on your people. You literally can’t do it alone.
    4. Be open and flexible. Things aren’t always what they seem.
    5. Celebrate every win, both big and small.

      I have a vague memory of doing an escape room with friends years ago. It can be a good bonding experience. And I guess if you (me) freak out and pound on the door, someone will let you out. I’m wondering if you enjoyed this escape room experience?

        I love them! And they don’t actually lock the door. Phew!

      I have never done an escape room and am not sure how I would react to being trapped even though I know it is to be a fun experience.

      I have never done an escape room! I like the idea of problem solving and sleuthing; however, there is a part of me that finds the idea of being “trapped” absolutely scary !!!!

      I’m claustrophobic, and just reading your post gives me chills. Having said that, I love the “life lessons.” Numbers 3 and 5, especially, have been on my radar this week—and fortunately I didn’t need an escape room to ponder them.

        Even though they don’t really lock you in, you are still in a fairly small enclosed room so I could see not liking it if you’re claustrophobic.

      I have only experienced one escape room at my campus leadership retreat one summer. My husband’s birthday is next week and that’s what he requested. I appreciate the tips. I’m speaking for myself here, but I think doing an escape room with family members is a different level of h-e-double hockey sticks than doing one with co-workers. We shall see…
