The hills are alive

…with the sound of music! This last weekend, the hubs and I headed back to the Hollywood Bowl for The Sound of Music Sing-a-Long. If you’ve never been to one of these, the event typically starts with a costume contest and then the sing-a-long version of the movie is played on a very big screen. The last few times we’ve been, we were also given a goodie bag with items to be deployed during the movie. For example, there’s a streamer popper to be popped when Maria and the Captain have their first kiss.

I have seen The Sound of Music in the double digits and attended the sing-a-along more than a handful of times. Sometimes I think I might get bored; it’s almost three hours long, after all. But no, every time it’s just as good as the last.

The level of creativity in costumes was really high this year. A few of my favorites: snowflakes that stay on your nose and eyelashes (person had a nose over their head), a group came as Liesl’s first sip of champagne with actual bubbles coming out of a giant champagne bottle; and a teen who dressed up as the host with her own favorite things sewn on to her dress.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to the Bowl these days without a moment of curmedgeoniness. Some people decided it would be fun to bring lasers and point them at the villains during the movie. Very annoying. There was an announcement made during intermission to stop with the lasers “on the Captain’s orders” that garnered huge applause and cheers. It did cut down on the number, but not all. You really gotta wonder, who hears everyone cheering about no lasers and then does it anyway. Doesn’t matter though, because I simply thought of my favorite things and then I didn’t feel so bad.

I have never been to a sing-a-long (believe me, you wouldn’t want me singing to anything). I can’t imagine what it was lie at the Hollywood Bowl with that number of people and that huge of a screen. There are, unfortunately, always those who have the need to spoil things for others.

Fantastic conclusion! It made me smile. Wide. I’ve never heard of a Hollywood Bowl, and your piece described it so well. I had flashbacks to my high school days when I’d go to the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I’ve been to a Sound of Music singalong in Seattle. It was so much fun. But one at the Hollywood Bowl! Thanks for sharing your adventure and beautiful smile with us.
