Secret mission

Last week I went on a 7-day cruise to Mexico with my family and my sister’s in-laws. All together there were 27 of us on the ship. My cabin mate was my 6-year old niece.

I was nervous that I’d become the constant babysitter to my roomie, but her mom reminded me that the grandparents would also be on the cruise so we had plenty of caretakers. Plus, there was always Kids Club. There was one night though when my other sister needed my 6-year old nephew to stay over with us. I decided that this would be a great opportunity to solidify my standing as a favorite aunt.

That night I told the littles that we were going on a late night secret mission to find ice cream. First, they needed to get their jammies on and then we’d go on the hunt. We exited our cabin quiet as mice and tiptoed past my sister’s cabin. (Kids didn’t know that I’d already gotten the okay from their parents.) Off we went to find the soft serve machine which was “miraculously” easy. Once the mission was complete we sat on the lido deck and enjoyed our spoils before going back to brush our teeth and get into bed.

It was a small little adventure, but brought us all so much joy. I hope this will be a memory that my niece and nephew keep for many years to come.

What kid doesn’t enjoy a secret mission. What a great way to bond as well as amuse them. I bet they had a difficult time not telling everyone about their late night adventure.

How exciting for the children. This reminds me of what engages children, a little adventure and play-like activity goes a long way. They’ll never forget this experience.

I’m not really a fan of cruises, but oh, I love those 24/7 soft serve machines…heaven. What a moment to remember for all of you! (I was impressed that they brushed their teeth after such clandestine activity!) Favorite aunt, indeed.

Vivian, what a sweet memory for them and for you! What fun! I love this slice of life you shared. Yes, they’ll remember. I have nephews and nieces who still tell stories of our escapades, and they are in their 50s now!
