Living a writerly life part 2

Last week I wrote about daily diary idea I learned from Lynda Barry’s book Syllabus. Well, here’s how it went…

I got really excited and set up a frame/template to use in my GoodNotes app with the intention of spending 5 minutes in the evening to complete my diary. Then the evening came and instead of opening up my iPad to write my entry, I went to bed. In the morning, I thought to myself, Maybe it’s better to do it every morning. You’ll be more consistent that way. I set a timer and completed my first day.

Then the next day rolled around and it seemed a little more challenging to remember what I did or saw or heard the day before. I thought 5 minutes a day would be so easy. Ha!

This experiment taught me that I don’t attend to the visuals around me or I see so much it was difficult to determine what I should actually record. I also found it challenging to remember things that I heard. I think I need to jot that immediately because the next day or even just minutes later, I’d forget.

Not sure if I’ll keep it up, but maybe it’s a nice strategy to have in my back pocket for when I need a reminder to be present.

I just picked up Syllabus from the library, and whether or not I keep up the daily diary, I know I’ll be enjoying the journey with her. She is inspirational!

I’m intrigued as everyone is mentioning Lynda Barry’s books. Can you jot down a word or two ‘in the moment’ throughout the day to refresh your memory later? I’m off to find Syllabus!

I’ve undertaken Barry’s Daily Diary a few times but never made it past Day 7 or 8 before taking a break that stretched into not doing it at all! So I very much understand. But I agree that this is a nice strategy to have in your back pocket.
