Spam

I was getting ready to write a post about SPAM, the canned meat, and I wanted to write a clever sentence bemoaning the fact that this delicious food has the same name as the hated junk email that clutters our inboxes when I learned this:

Spam is literally named after SPAM? Did everyone else know this??

I grew up eating SPAM. It tastes delicious in fried rice, scrambled eggs, and best of all, in spam musubi. We introduced my father-in-law to musubi this week. I was a little surprised that in all the years he’s visited Hawai’i he’d never had it before. Yesterday, my husband made us eggs and spam, which three of us ate with relish and one of us looked at with slight disgust.

I believe there are two camps: people who love SPAM and people who are wrong. At least we can all agree that spam in your inbox is terrible.

In which camp do you belong?

We grew up eating fried spam sandwiches and spam with pineapple stuck between slices and warmed in the oven. When I lived in Hong Kong, we had a delicious morning porridge with rice, Spam (only we called it Commie meat) and peanuts.

I love the clarity of this statement: “I believe there are two camps: people who love SPAM and people who are wrong.” Your conviction is overwhelming. Tbh, I don’t remember ever having tried SPAM, so I’d be willing to give it a whirl thanks to your unwavering endorsement.

I admit that I am in the wrong category. As kids we ate Spam. It was never one of my favorite foods no matter how it was served.

Yes. We were visiting with some full-time residents of Hawai’i and they were bemoaning the lack of homegrown/produced foods sold there.

I love your delineation of the two kinds of people. I have learned to be in the people who love spam group, only once I married my filipino husband. Working at a new school in Chinatown, I treat myself to spam musubi once a week. I am glad I realized how wrong I was.

I’ve been to a grocery store in Hawaii and y’all have shelves upon shelves of Spam flavors that no one in the mainland can imagine! I love Spam when we are camping-fried in the pan and served with eggs and toast. 🙂

As a vegetarian, I don’t think I’ll ever take to spam, but it’s fun to read about the ways that people love it. Your appreciation of it is palpable and contagious.
