I recently started listening to the audio version of the YA novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. [MILD SPOILER ALERT] A friend had recommended it to me and told me a bit about it so I knew there was supposed to be an element of romance to it. It’s true I’m just in the first third of the book, but I wasn’t feeling any chemistry between the two characters. These two were going to end up together? I wasn’t buying it. Until. There’s a scene when they end up caught in the rain. Instead of running home, the teen boys slow down and relishing their walk even as they get drenched. That was the moment when I started to believe that something could become of the pair.
Is it me? Or is there something about walking in the rain with someone that just screams romance? My husband says it’s because the rain envelopes you and even if there are other people around, you still feel like you’re having a private moment.
Thoughts?
I hadn’t thought about this, but as a person who has (ahem) gotten caught in the rain at one point or other in my life, I think there’s also something to be said for “forget it. Forget the world, we can officially ignore everything but one another.” It’s a kind of liberating feeling, actually…
