City wildlife

It’s been a long day and the thing that is bringing me some joy is thinking about a couple of special encounters with nature that we don’t always get as city folk.

The coyote below has been spotted a few times in the last couple of weeks actually. Ginger, our mutt, thinks it’s a friend to play with. We’ve had a whole coyote family camp out in our backyard. This guy looks kind of skinny–I feel bad, but it also means that the neighborhood cats and mini-dogs haven’t been made into snacks.

Just 10 minutes away from is the Arroyo Seco. We often walk the dog here for a change of scenery. The other day we spotted some ducks.

Nice contrast between the friendly coyote and the ducks. Hope they continue to exist in harmony.

We have coyotes, too, and they make snacks of cats. The catio comes in handy! I get that even a pest, but one that reminds us we’re the interlopers here, is a welcome sight. It makes me wish I knew birds better. Where I am staying in Hawaii there are so many unfamiliar flyers, nesters, singers. When I pointed the stunning song of one out to my sister, she said, “I don’t even hear them anymore.” The luxury of familiarity!

These days, coyotes, deer, raccoons and more are everywhere – even in cities. There is a red fox that lives nearby and I catch sight of him/her regularly but have yet to get a picture. Great picture taking skills!

Where I live it’s wild turkeys that wander about. They cause minor traffic issues, but otherwise are just funny to see in gangs of ten or so. We have a lot of ducks too, but not a lot of other critters besides the many, many squirrels. Thanks for sharing your critters.

One wild animal in its not normal habitat and one animal in the wild doing what it does.
