A little while back, okay, months ago, I told a colleague I was going to set a goal to write every day. (Side note: I recently saw a tip that said to determine whether you want everyday, as one word, or every day, as two words, insert the word f***ing in between and if still makes sense, it’s two words. Works like a charm!) Anyway, about three days after I made this declaration, this person asked how my writing was going. I hadn’t written a single word. (insert monkey covering face emoji here)
I did better as a teenager, when I declared I wasn’t going to eat red meat anymore. Starting tomorrow. My friend said, “Sure, you are,” as I took a bite of her ham sandwich. I didn’t eat red meat for decades starting that very next day. Showed her.
Anyway, on Sunday I read a great post from Matt Renwick about focusing on wins rather than resolutions or goals. In the post he mentioned that he kept a habit tracker for writing: every 50 words he wrote was a considered a win. I thought, I could do that. That small tweak of putting a number to the habit has made it much more manageable. When I had a goal of writing something, anything, every effing day, I often sat with writer’s block and no motivation. But I’ve been successful for the last three days since reading that post!
Fifty words a day? I can do that. (Please ask me how it’s going next week!)

For me, I’m only counting 50 words all at once and it has to either be part of a journal, a blog post, or for my possible book idea. I missed a couple of days, but I’m back in!

Fifty words a day. yes, that DOES sound doable. And yes, I’ll be checking in to see how that goes! Idealistic me would love to set that goal for myself…and realistic me knows that I’m already working on eighteen other things. So…I’ll THINK about it. In the meantime, I’ll check out the blog post you recommended.
And…for the record…as someone who has a reputation for cussing like a sailor (never in front of the kids, mind you), I LOVE the two-word trick!
