The magic of the library

This weekend I went on a quick trip to Seattle with my sisters, their kids, and our parents. We packed in as much eating and activity as we could with two 6-year olds in tow. On Sunday, having been on a ferry ride, visited a farm fall festival, watched fish being thrown at Pike Place, and more, we decided to make a stop into the Seattle Public Library. It gave the adults a chance to rest and some quiet activity for the kids.

The kids sat and played with the Magna-tiles and read books for a good amount of time while my sisters and I sat and rested our feet.

When asked what her favorite part of the trip was so far, my niece quickly answered, “The library!” And then proceeded to ask if we could go again the next day.

As a teacher and reader, this really made my day!

Libraries are so much more than a place where “Sh!” reigns supreme and books sit silently on shelves. Ours is a community hub, the best place for take-out in town—and free. I love that this was joy for the kids! (And a respite for you two.)

It is so delightful, as you show us, what children remember from a memorable trip and day. The peace of the library time was welcome to all of you! I am also taking this as a reminder to find these “down times” when traveling with children. Or anybody, for that matter!

I like your niece’s priorities. After busy day, a library is the perfect place for some quiet and relaxing time.

Vivian, I love that you thought to go to the library for a quiet rest time. So fun! And that it was your nieces favorite part is the icing on the cake.
