Hey there! I'm Vivian. Sometimes I write about life and sometimes I write about teaching.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how much I missed seeing people in person. (People in person…that has a fun ring to it.) Then a couple of days ago, I was on a Zoom meeting and, well, it turns out I miss seeing people online! To be fair, it’s not the online part I miss, but the ability to meet and be in community with people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

This last year plus, has afforded me so many opportunities for professional development that I would’ve missed if I had to attend in person. And that in turn connected me to some amazing new people. Even online, it turns out to be a small world. There were people I’d meet in one PD that I’d “run into” again in another. But as most of us head back to work in actual buildings, it feels like there are fewer and fewer of these opportunities. Fewer opportunities to meet new people and to reconnect with the ones already met.

There are quite a few people I’ve connected with online to whom I’ve said, “Let’s meet in person someday!” Some of those people are fellow slicers. (I’m looking at you Lainie!)

I hope that happens someday.

Interesting slice on the beauty of social media: meeting new friends. I would not have met you without online conversations but Zoom sessions have improved the power of communication. Here’s to meeting new colleagues!

We’ve found that online gatherings can be better (sometimes). Our book club has managed to gather in many who have moved away and were still reading the books. And our movie club has more people from out of town than local attendees. It’s an interesting time! Just knowing that you’re a middle school teacher has made me feel more connected to you and your slices. We (people who love middle schoolers) are a rare breed.
